What is Somatic Experiencing? Healing Through the Body’s Wisdom
When we think about healing, we often focus on thoughts and emotions, but our bodies hold onto experiences too- especially trauma and stress. Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a science-backed, body-centered approach to healing that helps us understand and release stress, trauma, and tension stored in the nervous system. While talking through experiences, SE provides tools to pause, notice, and gently reconnect with the body, regulate emotions, and regain a sense of control over your life.
Healing is not about "getting over it"—it's about moving through it in a way that feels safe and empowering. While there are small ways to start reconnecting with your body on your own, working with a guide through this journey can help you feel supported, grounded, and safe in this process.
Understanding Somatic Experiencing (SE)
Somatic Experiencing is a body-centered approach to healing trauma, stress, and nervous system dysregulation. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, SE focuses on how the body stores and responds to stress, even long after a difficult experience has passed. Instead of re-telling our stories and continuing to talk about our pain, SE helps us tune into physical sensations and gently release stored tension.
Many people who have experienced trauma may feel stuck, either constantly on edge or emotionally shut down. SE works by guiding the body back to a place of balance and safety, helping individuals reconnect with their inner sense of calm and resilience.
Signs Your Nervous System May Be Dysregulated:
-Feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or “on edge” all the time.
-Struggling to relax or feel safe, even in calm situations.
-Experiencing numbness or disconnection from emotions or body sensations.
-Reacting strongly to stressful situations or triggers without knowing why.
If any of these sound familiar, your body may be holding onto stress or past trauma, and somatic healing can help.
